Question: Why would taxes for guidelines be different than "actual" taxes?
Answer: The federal tax for guideline purposes may be different than "actual" taxes.
The reason for this is the treatment of spousal support.
If spousal support is being paid in the current year, that will be counted for "actual" taxes but often is omitted for the tax as calculated for guideline purposes.
In some states, there is an option to include or omit spousal support of the present relationship for purposes of the tax calculation as it pertains to the child support guideline calculation.
You will find this option on the screen where you enter the child support client information.
